Why buy handmade soaps?
Why should you buy handmade soap when you can get more soap for less money at the grocery store?
Generally, the commercial soaps carried at most chain stores are full of chemical additives, additives that not only dry out your skin but can lead to rashes and other irritations.
This is not only because of the synthetic additives in the soap but also because most soap companies take the glycerin out of their soap. The commercial soap bars that line most grocery stores’ shelves are actually synthetic detergents. While that might be good for your dishes, it’s not good for your skin!
Handmade Soap is soap in its true, pure form. It gently cleanses away excess oils and bacteria, but doesn't strip your skin of its natural oils.
Commercially made bars are not really soap (a combination of lye and fatty acids). They are made with synthetic detergents and often have other undesirable chemicals such as fillers, petroleum by-products, artificial fragrances, colorants, harsh preservatives or other chemicals that can cause allergic reactions.
These “soaps” also have the glycerin removed, in order for the company to make more money by selling the glycerin on its own. These ingredients lead to bars that strip skin of precious moisture and oils and create dry skin, requiring lotion to help soothe and restore moisture. The bars will often crack as they dry out , another indication of the effects they have on your skin.
If the commercial soap company does put in some natural ingredients along with its synthetic ones, they do so in such small quantities that it is hardly noticeable and not enough to be beneficial. Its main purpose is to catch the eye of the consumer and give them the illusion that this soap is more natural. If you read the ingredient labels you will likely the soap is still primarily made with synthetic ingredients.
Using commercial soaps over time leave your skin dried out or overly oily and feeling like its never clean. Natural handmade soap, that only uses natural ingredients, can restore the moisture to your skin while still cleansing remarkably well. You will be amazed at the difference!
In contrast, handmade soap contains oils and butters that have been carefully selected for their skin-nourishing benefits. Herbs are added for natural color, for their soothing properties and/or to help exfoliate dead skin cells. Finally, essential and fragrance oils provide lovely scent to the soap. Essential oils also provide aroma therapeutic properties The saponification process creates soap that does not contain any lye in the final product, and the end result is a mild soap that cleanses without stripping your skin of precious moisture and its natural protective oils.
Handmade soap is much less likely to dry out and crack because the glycerin that is created through the soap making process (called saponification) is not removed. Glycerin is a humectant, which helps to attract moisture into the skin and hold it there.
Many who use handmade soaps say that they don’t need to use any lotion after using handmade soap, because they no longer have that tight, dry skin they had when using commercial bars. Handmade soap is better than mass-produced bars primarily because of the ingredients used and the benefits to the skin. The only way to know is to try it out for yourself. So buy handmade soap today and let your skin experience the difference!
